Description
The 7th Iowa Infantry was organized at Burlington, Iowa and assembled into Federal service between July 24 and August 4, 1861 and were with General Ulysses S. Grant during the capture of Forts Henry and Donelson.
The 7th was on parade for inspection on the morning of April 6, 1862 when the battle of Shiloh commenced and were ordered to this position on the Sunken Road, to the left of the 2nd Iowa where this monument marks the center of the 7th's line of battle. The Confederates attempted several attacks that required them to traverse the open field in front of the 7th's excellent defensive position which utilized this sunken road and fence line. The 7th held this line all day with unrelanting accuracy until they were ordered to fall back as the Union worked to re-organize a new defensive position in front of Pittsburg Landing. On April 7, 1862, the 7th re-engaged the Confederates and helped to drive them from the field before noon. At Shiloh, the 7th suffered 9 men and 10 officers killed, 17 men wounded, and 7 missing.
With General Grant promoted to Lieutenant General in 1864, the 7th was placed under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman and served with him in his Georgia campaign which forced the Confederates to abandon the key cities of Savannah and Atlanta prior to the end of the war and were mustered out of service July 12, 18
