About the Image...
In this home ( 1860-1861 ), Ulysses S Grant lived prior to the US Civil War when he re-enlisted as a Colonel of the 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and in less than two years, he would be put in command of all Union armies during the Civil War. It was in this home while he was leaning against his fireplace that he learned that he had been elected to be the 18th President of the United States. After his second term in office, he retired from public life and returned to this home ( 1877-1885 ) and lived here until just a few months prior to his death in 1885. The Grant Home was designated a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966, upon that program's inception.
