Description
Theodore O'Hara, a Danville, Kentucky native, wrote the poem Bivouac of the Dead
to honor his fellow soldiers from Kentucky who died in the Mexican-American War, likely in 1847. The poem’s popularity increased after the Civil War and its verses have been featured on many memorials to fallen Confederate and Union soldiers across the United States, as well as memorials in Arlington National Cemetery, including Arlington's gateway.
During the late 1920s and 1930s, because O'Hara had fought for the Confederates, instances of lines from the poem on markers throughout national cemeteries were removed, leaving only fourteen with "Bivouac of the Dead" verses on tablets, including all four at Shiloh National Cemetery. In 2001, the National Cemetery Administration began returning the first stanza to any national cemetery in which the poem is missing. Parts of the poem may be found at several Civil War battlefields and cemeteries including Marye's Heights in Fredericksburg, Antietam National Cemetery, Winchester National Cemetery, Gettysburg National Cemetery, Shiloh National Cemetery, and Arlington National Cemetery.
