Description
This 10-pdr. ordnance rifled gun represents Battery A of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery's position during their primary engagement with Confederates on April 6th, 1862. The Battery has been referred to by different nicknames, but is referred to as "Willard's Battery" at the Battle of Shiloh.
After helping General Grant capture Fort Donelson, they were ordered to Pittsburg Landing near Shiloh, TN on March 27. During the battle, the Battery was ordered to support the 9th and 12th Illinois infantry regiments as they moved to engage Confederate troops which they found near the Peach Orchard, next to Bloody Pond ( which is the location that you see in this photograph ). It was here where they were engaged the heaviest before being ordered to defend Pittsburg Landing with their three remaining guns. The Battery fired 838 rounds of ammunition, with a loss of 4 men killed 26 wounded, and 48 killed or disabled horses. On the second day, they supported General Sherman's left flank firing 334 rounds of ammunition without losing additional men or horses.
