Description
South Mountain Park ( formerly known as the Salt River Mountains ), less than 20 minutes south of downtown Phoenix, is one of the largest municipally operated parks in the country. During the Great Depression from 1933 to 1940, the area was developed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps which included constructing Dobbin's Lookout which sits 1,000 ft. above the city. This spectacular viewpoint is named after James C. Dobbins who was the chairman of the Phoenix Planning Commission and spearheaded the efforts to purchase the land from the US federal government.
