Description
For it's 36 years of active service starting in 1855, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse provided sailors a beacon of light 422 feet above sea level as navigaional aide. But, all to often, fog and low cloud cover obscured it and a new one was put into service in 1891 lower and much closer to the water at the very tip of Point Loma. The light beacon you see at the top of the Lighthouse is a five foot tall 3rd order Fresnel lens, state of the art technology at the time, was manufactured in France. In clear weather, it could be seen for 25 miles away. In 1984, the light was re-lit again by the National Park Service for the first time in 93 years, in celebration of the lighthouse’s 130th birthday. Approximately 3,000 people with over 100 descendants of the of the last keeper, Captain Robert Decatur Israel, of the light attending.
