Description
The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and appears on the United States' seal. It is also a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. In the late 20th century, it was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States as numbers declined seriously during the first two-thirds of the 20th century. Shooting was one major cause; even after the eagles were given full legal protection, they continued to decline because of the effects of DDT and other persistent pesticides. Following the banning of DDT, populations have since recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the contiguous states on June 28, 2007.
