Fenced Line of Battle
Rutledge's Battery, Co A, First Tennessee Light Artillery was led by Captain Arthur Middleton Rutledge, a West Point graduate appointed by Andrew Jackson in 1833 ( Confederate General Braxton Bragg was a classmate ) and descendent of two signers of the Declaration of Independence. Their battery consisted of four iron 6 pounder smoothbore guns ( as shown in this photograph ) and two iron 12 pounder howitzers. Around February, 1862, the Battery was placed under the command of Col. W. S. Statham, which was part of Gen. John C. Breckenridge’s Reserve Corps.
The battery advanced with the rest of the Reserve Corp toward Shiloh to attack Gen. U.S. Grant’s army on April 6, 1862. After waiting most of the night with their horses in harness the battery advanced on the Confederate right to the camp of the Union's 18th Wisconsin Infantry. They opened fire at noon against Gen. Stephen Hurlbut’s Division near the Peach Orchard ( opposite the field in this photograph ). Rutledge’s well trained artillerists drove Hurlbut back to another line at about 2:30 PM. That afternoon, they formed part of the line of Confederate artillery which became known as “Ruggles Battery” at Duncan Field, and fired into the Hornet's Nest from 3 PM to 5 PM.
