Here, located between Bloody Pond and Water Oaks Pond on the Shiloh National Battlefield, a 6-pdr muzzle-loading Smoothbore Field cannon is positioned where the 11th and 20th Illinois Union regiments captured all 6 cannons of the Confederate's 1st Kentucky Artillery ( Cobb's Battery ) of the Orphan Brigade around noon on April 6th, 1862 with all 34 troops of the battery being killed according to an official Confederate report. After advancing to capture a Confederate standard, the 11th and 20th regiments fell back allowing the Confederates to subsequently recaptured their guns.
After reading the details of the fighting that took place at this location, it is sobering to comprehend that you are standing on ground that witnessed such brutal combat with with dead and dying soldiers and horses laying on the ground where you stand.
