Description
One of the most renowned stories of the American Civil War took place were this monument stands identifying the location of Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters at Pittsburg Landing at the battle of Shiloh and it is squarely in the middle of today's cemetery. Here, after the conclusion of fighting on April 6th, 1862, Grant sought refuge from the torrential rain that evening by seeking shelter under a large oak tree ( no longer there ). He tried to seek shelter in a nearby cabin that was turned into a make-shift hospital, but couldn't tolerate the smell which was reminiscent of his father’s tannery that he hated so much.
Grant's most trusted subordinate, General William Tecumseh Sherman, who had been wounded four times that day, albeit slightly, found Grant leaning against a huge oak tree, hat pulled low over his brow, trying to sleep in the rain.
The conversation is reported to have been such:
Sherman: Well, Grant, it’s been a devil of a day.
Grant: (nodding) Whup ’em tomorrow, though.
Then the two Generals puffed silently on their cigars in the rain as word from Buell arrived that 20,000 fresh troops would be there by morning. And it would start all over again.
