Description
The Illinois State monumental Shiloh National Battlefield was sculptured by Richard W. Bock and dedicated in 1904 to all Illinois troops who participated in the battle of Shiloh.
The crowning figure, designed to represent the State of Illinois, holds a book in her left hand containing a record of her sons' achievements on this field. In her right hand is a sheathed sword, scabbard held with a firm grasp as if in readiness for release of the blade and a renewal of the battle. Watchfully, guardingly, her gaze is bent towards the south, from where her enemies came, and the look upon her face is one of admonition.
The monument itself stands a total of 35 feet high, the base is 23 feet high and the bronze figure is another 12 feet high which alone weighs 7000 lbs.
