Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard was one of the most prominent Southern commanders at the outset of the American Civil War. A graduate of West Point and a veteran of the Mexican-American War, Beauregard gained early fame by commanding Confederate forces at the Battle of Fort Sumter in April 1861, effectively initiating the war. He went on to achieve a major victory at the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) later that year, in coordination with General Joseph E. Johnston. Despite his successes, Beauregard often clashed with Confederate leadership, particularly President Jefferson Davis, which limited his opportunities for higher command.
Throughout the war, Beauregard played key roles in the Western and Eastern Theaters. He helped defend Corinth, Mississippi, and later took part in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, where his engineering skills were especially valuable. In 1864, he helped delay Union forces during the Petersburg Campaign, buying time for General Robert E. Lee to fortify defenses. Though sidelined from major field commands later in the war, Beauregard remained a respected strategist. After the conflict, he became involved in civil engineering and railroads and advocated for civil rights and reconciliation during Reconstruction, making his postwar legacy notably different from many of his Confederate peers.
