An enigmatic lonely seaside stone turret on Victoria Beach in Laguna, CA is affectionately called the “Pirate Tower” by locals. The tower is sixty feet tall and was built in 1926 as an enclosed staircase to the beach for William E. Brown, a senator from Los Angeles who developed into an avid and acclaimed painter. In the early 1940s, Brown sold his home to a retired naval captain, Harold Kendrick. Kendrick was a lifelong pirate aficionado and found himself attracted to the home because of the odd, slightly askew tower. Kendrick would dress in pirate regalia and invite local kids over for games and stories of the sea. The tower itself often made an appearance in Kendrick’s tales bringing them to life.
I am a San Diego based landscape and wildlife photographer, born and raised in Stockton, Illinois ( the 'S' is - not - pronounced ). I am one of the many that came to San Diego for a visit and just kept delaying my plans to go home. Although my heart is still pulled to the rural and slower lifestyle of growing up in farm country, my life is in and around San Diego. Over the years, I've grown to appreciate the big city lifestyle, but I always crave getting outside, discovering new places, reaching for those places that remind me of my youth, and to find connections with folks that are also from Northwest Illinois.
