Description
Pittsburg Landing, located on the West bank of the Tennessee River at Shiloh, TN. It was named for "Pitts" Tucker who operated a tavern at the site in the years preceding the Civil War and subsequent battle that took place at Shiloh. Pitts' tavern was on the site that is now Shiloh National Military Park Visitor Center and adjacent National Cemetery.
The roads linking this landing southward to Corinth, Mississippi, was one of the primary reasons General William T. Sherman selected this site to stage Federal troops in mid-March in the Union's quest to take Corinth, MS. It was here that Grant's Army of The Tennessee disembarked from barges and established their camps. During the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, this landing permitted General Buell's Army of the Ohio to start disembarking their barges late in the day and engage the Confederate forces in Grant's Last Line to defend the landing. During the night, the remainder and bulk of Buell's army disembarked at the landing to reinforce Grant and start fighting the Confederates the next day to retake the battlefield.
In this photo, the Tennessee River is to the right, just out of view with the Shiloh National Cemetery behind the tree line.
