William B. Ochiltree was a prominent Texas statesman and Confederate officer who played a significant role in both the political and military arenas during the Civil War era. Prior to the war, he briefly served in the U.S. House of Representatives after being elected in 1860, though he resigned in early 1861 following Texas’ move toward secession. He was a delegate to the Texas Secession Convention, where he voted in favor of leaving the Union, and was subsequently elected to represent Texas in the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States. Choosing to take a more direct role in the conflict, Ochiltree resigned from Congress and organized the 18th Texas Infantry Regiment, becoming its first colonel. He led the regiment in the Trans-Mississippi theater during 1862, but resigned his commission in 1863 due to ill health. After returning to civilian life in Jefferson, Texas, he remained a respected public figure until his death in 1867.
