Description
Ross' battery ( Battery B, Ross' Battery, 2nd Michigan Lt. Artillery, Hurlbutt's 4th Division, Army of the Tennessee ) of 6 Parrot guns became engaged with Confederates on the opposite side of this field ( out of view to the left ) at about 9am on April 6th, 1862 as the Battle of Shiloh was quickly ramping up. The unit fell back to the woods behind this location and soon afterwards were ordered forward and unlimbered their guns in front of William Manse's cabin, directly west of Sarah Bell's Peach Orchard. This position concealed them from the enemy until they were in a direct line of fire of about 100 yards which allowed point blank accuracy.
The unit resisted fiercely which required three Confederate infantry regiments, supported by cavalry, under the immediate direction of Gen. Beauregard to overwhelm them and ultimately force the the unit to surrender. Official Confederate battle reports claimed "There was more fighting over this battery than any other battery on the field." During the fight for the guns, the unit did manage to put a bullet in Gen. Beauregard's arm from which he recovered.
