Description
Battery K, 1st Missouri Light Artillery Regiment was mustered into service on September 1, 1861 from the 1st Missouri Infantry and assigned to the Union's Army of the Tennessee. The unit saw action under General Ulysses S Grant at Fort's Henry and Donelson, Shiloh, 1st and 2nd Corinth, and Bayou Fourche with Shiloh being it's heaviest action while armed with four 10-pdr Parrott cannons. One of their actions at Shiloh on April 6, 1862 was working with Mann's Battery to rescue the horses of Meyer's 13th Ohio after they were frightened by a Confederate shell that destroyed one of their caissons. After securing the horses, they began spiking the guns of the 13th Ohio to prevent the Confederates from using them. During Shiloh, only 4 enlisted men were wounded.
This photograph is taken near the Shiloh National Battlefield Visitor's Center when the unit was deployed in Grant's Last Line in defense of Pittsburg Landing.
