About the Image...
Originally built in 1825, Union artillerists positioned east of the bridge fired the opening shots of the First Battle of Bull Run ( or Manassas ) over the stream crossing and into oncoming Confederate infantry lines the morning of July 21, 1861. Routed, the Union army fled the battlefield back into Maryland over this bridge and damaged it in an effort to delay an expected Confederate persuit. On August 29 and 30, 1862, the Union and Confederate armies met again in raging battle for two days, and again the Union army was forced to retreat across the bridge, which was destroyed on August 31, 1862. There are differing reports as to which army destroyed it for their own tactical reasons. Nonetheless, Union army engineers constructed a temporary wooden span over the bridge ruins later in 1862 to support an Union army campaign into Virginia. The present-day Stone Bridge was rebuilt in 1884 to match the original design and construction.
About American Landscapes
I am a San Diego based landscape and wildlife photographer, born and raised in Stockton, Illinois ( the 'S' is - not - pronounced ). My love for photography was born out my creative instincts. During my professional training in advertising design, a course in...
