About the Image...
Much of Nevada, Lyon County in particular, consist of wild horse country. Three herds inhabit the central county: the Pine Nut, Lahontan, and the Virginia Range herd. The Virginia Range herd, estimated at around 2,500 strong in 2016, is believed to be the largest herd of publicly owned free-roaming horses in North America with the horses being spread out over four counties. This particular stallion, part of the Virginia Range herd was clearly the dominant of all the stallions surrounding Hwy 50 in Northern NV as he kept nearly 60 other horses in-check which consisted of about 5-6 different family bands.
I don't know his name, but his scars and healing wounds are a testament to his resiliency, persistence, and hardiness. No other stallion truly challenged him, but one young foal did get a little sassy when he felt unnecessarily hassled causing this lead stallion to momentarily pause.
I am always in awe when I'm in the presence of these living icons of American history.
