Description
The Sixteenth regiment was assigned to the 6th Division, General Prentiss, which occupied the extreme left of General Grant's army, being posted four miles out on the main road to Corinth, and some distance in advance. The First Brigade, Colonel Everett Peabody commanding, consisted of the Twenty-fifth Missouri, Sixteenth Wisconsin, and Twelfth Michigan infantry.
On the morning of April 6th, the division was soon under arms with the 16th forming in line of battle in front of their camp, in the edge of the timber, where they were joined by the companies on picket, who in turn were followed closely by the enemy. The advance of the Confederates was checked, until the lines were broken on the right which forced the regiment to fall back to reform their battle line in front of their camp and again held the Confederates in check. The regiment again fell back, through the camp, fighting, until they were relieved by another regiment to replenish with ammunition. The 16th was pressed back into action about 2 P. M. and after Colonel Allen was severely wounded, Major Reynolds took command of the regiment and moved it to a position on the right where it remained until dark. On the 7th, the regiment occupied several different positions along the line, wherever the exigencies of the occasion seemed to require it, but were not very actively engaged.
These cenotaphs forever remember all 6 of the 16th Wisconsin's color guard who died carrying the regimental colors. Unfortunately, they are not actually buried here, but are either in their original graves unmarked and still undiscovered on the battlefield or in the unknown graves where the 16th Wisconsin section of the cemetery is. Nonetheless, this Circle of Honor is one of the focal points of the cemetery.
